In 1972, William Jay Bowerman (February 19, 1911 – December 24, 1999) created the first-ever “Moon Shoe” prototype by pouring rubber into a waffle iron. By that time, the innovative sole provided a level of traction and shock absorption for runners unlike anything else, becoming Nike’s first revolutionary invention.
