With the birth of New Balance 550 the Boston-based brand is seriously shifting its focus from performance running silhouettes to basketball sneakers. When the iconic low-top model was launched in 1989 it wasn't a rare sight among 80s and 90s professional basketball players before its popularity faded and the silhouette went into oblivion for decades.

In 2018, designer Teddy Santis, the creator of the NYC-based streetwear brand Aimé Leon Dore, stumbles across a picture of the 550 and decides to give the shoe new life. A few years and many adjustments later, 550 relaunches in September 2020, and already in November 2020, New Balance announces that the shoe will once again be part of the brand's mainline collection after 30 years in the archives.

Today, New Balance is widely recognized for their versatile silhouettes for men and women, and regularly collaborates with brands that give their take on classics from the archives. New Balance 550 is no exeption, that has been released in a wide range of colorways since its comeback and has rightly become one of the most coveted silhouettes.
